Research Centre Description

Pwani Research Centre, based in Mombasa was established in 1993, and is a collaborative effort of the University of Nairobi (UoN), the University of Washington (UW), the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Mombasa County, the Ministry of Health, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC), and the US President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

The objectives of the organization are:

  • To provide high quality care to at-risk and HIV-positive women participating in the high-risk women’s cohort (Mombasa Cohort).
  • To conduct innovative HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention and treatment research that will contribute substantially to local as well as global knowledge and implementation of effective interventions.
  • To support HIV and STI prevention, care, and research efforts in Mombasa by training Kenyan researchers and practitioners, implementing technology transfer, and contributing to infrastructure development.
  • To participate in clinical research conducting high-quality and ethical research studies, generate reliable data on new treatments and therapies, and improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Starting in mid-2024, the Mambo Matatu Study will evaluate the impact and cost-effectiveness of WHO-recommended presumptive periodic treatment (PPT) versus doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) compared to standard syndromic treatment for STI among Kenyan MSM.

In Mombasa, Pwani Research Centre will collaborate with HAPA-Kenya, a non-governmental organization providing services to gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in the Mombasa area. This site will enroll 967 participants.

The trial duration will be 3 ½ years.

Job Summary

The clinical officers will work under the supervision of Drs. Susan Graham and Eduard Sanders (principal investigators) and are based full time at HAPA-Kenya.

Essential Job Functions

  • Screening and enrollment of eligible participants.
  • Collect medical history and perform physical examinations of participants.
  • Diagnose and treat study participants for syndromic STI.
  • Collect specimens and confirm correct labeling of the specimens.
  • Countercheck specimens and supervise their transportation to the laboratory as well as supervise accurate entry of laboratory results in to the study record books.
  • Avail syphilis results to study participants and treat them accordingly.
  • Maintain consents and consent audits for ongoing projects.
  • Cover for emergency calls from study participants.
  • Conduct face-to-face questionnaires with research participants.
  • Conduct daily continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Weekly laboratory review and results entry.
  • Enter study data as needed.
  • Perform any additional tasks as assigned by the principal investigators.

Qualifications / Skills / Experience

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery.
  • Registered by the Kenya Clinical Officers Council with a valid practicing license.
  • At least 2 years’ clinical research experience.
  • Experience in clinical trials and in the field of HIV/AIDS and STI.
  • Computer literacy skills with MS Office software. Statistical software skills e.g. SPSS or Stata will be an advantage.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Fluent in English and Kiswahili.
  • Focused and attentive to detail.

Terms of Employment
