Research Centre Description

Pwani Research Centre, based in Mombasa was established in 1993, and is a collaborative effort of the University of Nairobi (UoN), the University of Washington (UW), the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Mombasa County, the Ministry of Health, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC), and the US President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

The objectives of the centre are:

  • To provide high quality care to at-risk and HIV-positive women participating in the high-risk women’s cohort (Mombasa Cohort).
  • To conduct innovative HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention and treatment research that will contribute substantially to local as well as global knowledge and implementation of effective interventions.
  • To support HIV and STI prevention, care, and research efforts in Mombasa by training Kenyan researchers and practitioners, implementing technology transfer, and contributing to infrastructure development.
  • To participate in clinical research conducting high-quality and ethical research studies, generate reliable data on new treatments and therapies, and improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Mambo Matatu Study will evaluate the impact and cost-effectiveness of WHO-recommended presumptive periodic treatment (PPT) versus doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) compared to standard syndromic treatment for STI among Kenyan MSM.

The trial duration will be 3 ½ years.

Job Summary

The Research Community Liaison Officer position serves as a focal person for the Mambo Matatu Study in Mombasa and will collaborate with HAPA-Kenya non-governmental organization to ensure recruitment and retention of study participants and assist in research data collection, entry, cleaning, and study logistics at the HAPA-Kenya offices in Mombasa.

Essential Job Functions

  • Work with the HAPA-Kenya outreach team to facilitate understanding of the aims of the Mambo Matatu Trial.
  • Engage with the Community Advisory Board of HAPA-Kenya and facilitate their understanding of the Mambo Matatu study aims.
  • Identify strategies to recruit eligible participants for the Mambo Matatu study
  • Assist in coordinating recruitment and retention activities.
  • Administer research study surveys.
  • Assist in data entry and checking process.
  • Assist in qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Perform any other assigned duties.

Qualifications / Skills / Experience

  • Holder of a Diploma in Community Health/Diploma in Counselling Psychology
  • At least 4 years’ experience in a research setting.
  • Excellent knowledge of both the city and the peri-urban geographical region of Mombasa.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals.
  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse environment.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision, and be ready to work for long hours when necessary.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili.
  • Certification in good clinical practice and human subjects training is an added advantage.
  • Familiarity working with individuals and key populations living with or at risk for HIV is an added advantage.
  • Certificate in HIV Testing Services and/or Certificate in HIV/AIDS Counselling is an added advantage.

Terms of Employment
