Research Centre Description

Pwani Research Centre, based in Mombasa was established in 1993, and is a collaborative effort of the University of Nairobi (UoN), the University of Washington (UW), the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Mombasa County, the Ministry of Health, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC), and the US President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

The objectives of the organization are:

  • To provide high quality care to at-risk and HIV-positive women participating in the high-risk women’s cohort (Mombasa Cohort).
  • To conduct innovative HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention and treatment research that will contribute substantially to local as well as global knowledge and implementation of effective interventions.
  • To support HIV and STI prevention, care, and research efforts in Mombasa by training Kenyan researchers and practitioners, implementing technology transfer, and contributing to infrastructure development.
  • To participate in clinical research conducting high-quality and ethical research studies, generate reliable data on new treatments and therapies, and improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

We are looking to hire a detail- oriented pharmaceutical technologist to join our team in a clinical trial and cohort setting.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring accurate dispensing of study and non-study medicines, patient counselling, proper handling of pharmaceutical supplies and other related duties as may be assigned.

Essential Job Functions

  • Dispense study products and non-study medications accurately and efficiently, adhering to all relevant protocols and regulations.
  • Prepare and dispense prescribed medications and pharmaceutical preparations according to participants’ prescription.
  • Ensure all pharmaceutical supplies are properly stored and maintained.
  • Assist in the management of clinical trial drug inventory, including tracking and reporting of drug usage and supply levels.
  • Ensuring accurate and timely records of dispensed medicines and study products in the pharmacy logs and in the accountability logs and Database.
  • Maintaining Pharmacy Room and Refrigerator temperatures and logs.
  • Counsel participants on adherence and compliance on study product and non-study medicines.
  • Participants Randomization Process in liaison with data and clinic teams.
  • Support and promote the safe ethical use of study products and non-study medicines.
  • Conduct quality control assessments of pharmaceutical supplies and report any issues or discrepancies to management.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Specific Standard Procedures (SSPs) related to pharmaceutical activities.
  • Have knowledge and experience in compounding of pharmaceuticals, following aseptic techniques.
  • Write reports and maintain accurate records related to pharmaceutical activities.
  • Establish and maintain good relationships with participants to foster study retention.
  • Perform other functions as requested.

Qualifications / Skills / Experience

  • Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from KPPB accredited institution.
  • Must be registered and licensed by the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
  • Training in Good Clinical Practice & Human Subject Protection.
  • Experience working in a clinical research setting is an added advantage.
  • A minimum of one-year experience especially in inventory control and management.
  • Knowledge in Computer Packages will be an added advantage.
  • Good intrapersonal and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work well as part of a team, and to collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals.
  • Keen attention to detail.
